The Womens Center for Life Management: The Women’s Center for Life Management was initiated by Wesley Shelter in response to client requests that we help them develop the skills they needed to become financially independent and to support a healthy, non-violent, independent lifestyle. Students in the program participate in two separate 12-week curriculums. The Professional Path exposes students to material that will better prepare them to obtain and sustain meaningful employment. The Personal Path exposes students to materials that will better prepare them to be financially self-sustaining. The classes are taught by agency staff and by local professionals from the community who have volunteered their time to help the participants build bridges to the community. ESL classes are offered twice weekly on a year-round basis as a part of the agency’s Hispanic Outreach Program. Students participate in pre and post evaluations and in a yearlong support group to document behavior changes and increase the likelihood that they will remain employed. Graduates are encouraged to return as guest lecturers and as peer mentors.

Foremost in everyone’s mind is the need for each woman who comes to Wesley Shelter for assistance in rebuilding her life to gain the skills that will allow her to obtain gainful employment and begin a path to financial security as a first step toward empowering their ability to protect and nurture their children and insuring that all of those children are able to reach their fullest potential.

The program is currently supported by Upper Coastal Plain’s Workforce Development Board and scholarships sponsored by local businesses and individuals. Should you or your company wish to sponsor a scholarship, please contact Carole Tyndall, Director of Community Education, or Pam Lamm, Director of Development.
