Adolescent Parenting Programs: Adolescent Parenting Program I:

The Adolescent Parenting Program (APP) in Wilson County is funded soley by Smart Start funds through the Wilson County Partnership for Children. Since March of 1996, over 800 girls have participated and successfully completed this program. With only 5 high school dropouts and 8 repeat pregnancies since the programs inception, the statistics speak for themselves. The Adolescent Parenting Program at Wesley Shelter has been recognized as one of the most successful parenting programs statewide.

Program Objectives:
The APP serves pregnant and parenting teenagers (females) enrolled in high school or an equivalent GED/Adult high school program and their children ages 0 to 5, throughout Wilson County by providing them with services individualized to meet each client's needs, including: educational information, health care needs, birth control, parenting issues, infant and newborn care, child care referrals and resolutions, life skills, and positive support. Training is offered in the classroom setting weekly and bi-weekly in all the high schools in Wilson County and Middle Schools by invitation only. Individual one on one sessions are available, as well as a monthly support group. Referrals to other community agencies are also given when appropriate. We encourage our clients to set and meet educational goals that are aimed at allowing them to become self-sufficient. APPI is funded by the Wilson County Partnership for Childeren. APPI focuses on providing support to the adolescent parent so that their child will receive a direct impact of knowledge gained.

Program Goals:
Clients participating in the program will be expected to work toward the program goals. All programs, both group and individual, will be aimed at helping the clients to obtain the following goals:
1. Delay or prevent a repeat pregnancy before they are ready.
2. Help participants earn their high school diploma or GED.
3. Ensure parent and child receive health care
4. Ensure every child is enrolled in a star rated center.
5. Help strengthen or establish a support system between parent and child.
6. Assist in building self-esteem and improve self-image of the program participants.
7. Promote positive parenting skills.
8. Ensure that every child is living in an environment that promotes physical, mental, and emotional stability and security.

Adolescent Parenting Program II:

The Adolescent Parenting Program (APP) was started on a state level in North Carolina in 1984 by the Deparment of Human Resources-Social Services Division. The Adolescent Parenting Program II (APPII) received its first cycle of funding in Wilson County in November of 2005 The program in its first year will enroll up to 25 pregnant and or parenting teens, that are determined to be at an increased risk for repeat pregnancy, for intensive case management services. The program is funded through Medicaid, state appropriations, and local provider match.

Program Objectives:
The APPII serves pregnant and parenting teenagers (females) ages 15-17, that have only one child, are enrolled in high school and medicaid eligible. This project addresses secondary prevention by providing intensive case management and support in the home environment. APPII takes a "Holistic" approach and strives to meet the needs of not just the teenage mother and child but the entire family support system. APPII is structured to unite families and build or increase the entire family support system through impacting the teenage parent.

Program Goals:
APPII participants are expected to participate weekly in an intensive individual contact and home visit setting. All services offered through this program are directed solely at accomplishing the following goals:
1. Assist teens in delaying subsequent pregnancies.
2. Remain in high school with the goal of graduation.
3. Avoid incidences of abuse and neglect of their children.
4. Prepare for employment.
5. Enhace parenting abilities.
